Beautiful Tragedy

2 years ago, I was anxious. I woke up, went to practice like I was supposed to. Practiced til we got it right, then we were able to leave until later that night. I came home, got my things straightened around the house and packed my clothes for my dads. It hadn’t hit me yet, but I knew it would. There I was, after 4 years of being in high school, I knew it was time. Graduation day. I graduated 2 years ago from a school where everyone in your graduating class was like family. Everyone knew everyone, everyone talked to everyone. Later on that night, once I walked across the stage, shook hands with the principal and the super attendant and graduation was over. I walked down the hall of my high school once last time, with my fellow graduates to go receive a folder that held my actual diploma. Anxiously waiting to walk out the doors, then to realize that was the last time I’d ever actually walk in & out those doors, down those halls, and walk into classrooms. Those memories, still with me.

But today isn’t my day. In fact, it’s my sisters. Later tonight around 6, she will stand in line with her fellow graduates, walk up on stage & receive her diploma. This is it, what’s left of me & my sister. No more high school graduations for my family. It’s just college now. I’m still in shock that my little sister is graduating. Even if we are 2 years apart, it still means a lot to me. 

“It’s a bitter sweet goodbye, but I’m not gonna cry.” I know she’ll be around for at least a year at home to attend Francis Marion University, where I started my freshman & sophomore year of college at. But then she’ll leave me after that year and hopefully attend College of Charleston, like she’s always dreamed of.
